Bingo halls have had a tough time in recent years with the growth of playing online and increased taxation. The national smoking ban has also resulted in thousands of players opting instead to stay at home a take part in cheaper internet games.
Several halls have faced closure as the industry struggles to cope with a combination of factors which have damaged profits. In the current economic environment, many bingo halls are looking to promote themselves as a relatively cheap alternative leisure activity.
Mecca Bingo will soon be unveiling the UK's first Super Bingo hall in Beeston, near Nottingham. This will be the biggest and most ambitious bingo hall project for years and is expected to attract thousands of visitors.
The hall will also include numerous additional features and act as a centre for community groups to meet. The latest gaming technologies will be put in place to ensure the modern venue impresses visitors.
This won't deter older players as a spokeswoman said "We are considering the more traditional players." She went onto add, "But this doesn't have to restrict others. They can come and move tables and chairs around and do as they please."

California charities warned to end electronic bingo, by Peter Hecht - The Sacramento Bee - 4th April 2009
The state attorney general's office is warning charitable bingo parlors to stop using casino-style machines after a federal appeals court ruled the games are illegal.
In a ruling March 27, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said a new state law that took effect Jan. 1 effectively bans charities from using the electronic games.
Doug Bergman, president of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Sacramento, said the group will go back to the U.S. District Court in Sacramento and file additional motions in a last-ditch effort to stop state and county authorities from shutting down the games.
United Cerebral Palsy uses electronic bingo to raise money for programs that promote independence and productivity for people with developmental disabilities.
It was continuing to operate the games under a court injunction – now overturned by the 9th Circuit.
Jacob Appelsmith, chief of the attorney general's Bureau of Gambling Control, said state lawyers have told bingo halls "that their clients must begin removing the illegal gambling machines from their gambling establishments."
The United Auburn Tribe, operator of the Thunder Valley Casino in Placer County, threatened last year to withhold tens of millions of dollars of revenue-sharing payments to California if the charity groups continued to operate the games. (Credit:

Online lottery in West Australia - 29th March 2009
West Australians are waiting for a proposal to reach the conclusion and submission to the provincial government soon to be accepted so they will be able to take pleasure in the convenience of Internet betting on state lotteries.
Lotterywest CEO Jan Steward unveiled to the West Australian newspaper this week that her staffs were completing up the final steps of a proposal for consideration by the state government within the next two weeks.
The plan is going to see all games except “scratch and win” tickets, such as Super 66 and the Soccer Pools available by visiting the Lotterywest’s website to click on the link. Customers are going to have to open a bank account first, in order to check the age of gamblers when in need. They would propose limits on the amount they plan to bet, and gambling on credit would not be permitted.

More iGaming Ads Banned in U.K.
Online bingo advertisments allegedly "appeal to children", per Advertising Standards Authority
April 1, 2009 (CAP Newswire) -- Continuing to dictate the supposed moral authority of the United Kingdom at the expense of Internet business, the U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ordered Tombola Bingo to remove two of its advertisements from circulation, a number of media sources have reported this week.
According to Bingo.org, the popular bingo site is under orders to remove its ads because of complaints issued by just one citizen -- a situation that, while seemingly unfair, is sadly not unique regarding the ASA.
“ASA maintained that the Tombola Bingo ads, which featured a funfair scene and roller coaster ride, as well as a hot air balloon and a battleship, appealed to children and youngsters and therefore went against the regulations set in place by the UK Gambling Commission,” states the article.
Tombola Bingo is arguing that the ads simply reflect its new bingo game offerings, with a fun attitude that “acted as a metaphor for the online bingo experience and which would attract new bingo players but not attract a younger audience”. Unfortunately, that argument is not likely to sway the staunchly authoritarian ASA.
