The PartyBingo.com British Red Cross Fundraiser
During March, we promised to make a donation to the British Red Cross based on how many PartyPoints players collected during the period. Now that the donation has been received, we’d like to share a letter and certificate The British Red Cross have kindly sent to PartyBingo.com acknowledging and thanking our players’ support.
Dear PartyBingo.com,
On behalf of the British Red Cross I would like to thank you for Party Bingo’s donation of £10,000. Your support is greatly appreciated and really will help make a huge difference to the lives of those facing crisis both in the UK and overseas.
The British Red Cross meets the needs of vulnerable people and communities across the UK. With the support of over 35,000 volunteers we provide care and relief to thousands of people affected by emergencies, from fires and floods to major incidents.
Recently, 15 year old Mitchell Holmes saved his father’s life following a heart attack, thanks to his Red Cross first aid training. He immediately started to give his stricken father cardio- pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) treatment, which helped keep him alive until paramedics arrived.
Mitchell said: “When I saw what was happening, instinct took over. Since I’d taken two Red Cross first aid courses, at school and with the army cadets, it was all quite fresh in my mind. I didn’t feel scared at the time – I just knew what I had to do.”
As part of the world’s largest humanitarian network – the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement – the British Red Cross also provides assistance during times of International crisis.
When cyclone Sidr hit Bangladesh in mid November, thousands of homes were washed away and more than 5.5 million people were affected. The British Red Cross distributed essential emergency items to help people rebuild their homes, it also deployed medical units to assist those in need and a livelihoods specialist to assess recovery needs of those communities affected by the cyclone.
Without the generosity of supporters such as Party Bingo’s our life saving work would not be possible. Thanks to donations such as yours, we are able to respond immediately to help vulnerable people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are.
Thank you for your support, it really will make a difference.
Yours sincerely,
Katy Bodkin
Corporate Partnerships Executive
Again thank you to all our players who took part.

Oz Lotto fever sweeps the nation as draw hits $90 million - News.com.au - 30th June 2009
Tonight's Oz Lotto draw hits record $90m
Newsagents swamped with demand for tickets
Government fights over revenue from draw
Lotto fever is sweeping the nation with tonight's record jackpot tipped to break through $90 million.
Just hours remain before millions of Australians will crowd around televisions, radios and internet-enabled devices to learn if they will become a multi-millionaire.
Queues formed outside many Oz Lotto agents yesterday and fortune hunters could be in for a long wait today to buy their tickets.
Many newsagents will stay open an hour later than usual tonight to handle the rush, but are required by law to shut shop at 7.30pm.
The Oz Lotto jackpot soared to a record $90 million after there were no first division winners in the June 23 draw.
Last week's $50 million first division prize pool eventually topped $59 million, fuelling expectations that tonight's jackpot could creep towards $100 million.
Organisers won't know what the final amount is until ticket sales cease, just before the balls drop.
Tattersall's Lotteries chief executive Bill Thorburn said if the final sum tops $90 million, it will be added to the prize money.
"We are now in unprecedented territory, with Australians wholeheartedly embracing the country's biggest lotto draw," he said.
"We've guaranteed a minimum $90 million first division jackpot, but there's a chance it could go even higher depending on player participation."
Mr Thorburn thinks it's odds-on at least one lucky Australian will see their numbers come up.
Mathematicians say the odds of winning are one in 45 million and, aside from buying more entries, there is no way of tipping the odds in your favour.
"To put it in perspective, people around age 20 are 20,000 times more likely to die this year than to win the lotto," maths professor Peter Adam said.
Those odds haven't stopped Newcastle couple Matt Bear and Rebecca Bullock already have a plan as to how they will spend at least some of the prize.
The couple said that would pay off their house, get a new car and help out friends and family.
No matter which punter or punters claims the record prize from the 10 million Australians who have bought a ticket so far, the unprecedented jackpot will delivering a windfall of more than $26 million to the Government's coffers.
And now the pressure is on for the Government to actually spend its windfall, rather than let the money plug part of its Budget black hole.
The Opposition wants it invested in vital cancer-treating radiotherapy machines. The Greens have demanded it be used to boost the number of dental clinicians by funding more student positions at the University of Queensland's faculty of dentistry.
But youth worker Father Chris Riley wants the Government to take a punt and invest in charities.
"That money needs to go back into the community where it came from," he said. "They should target the charities that deal with gambling and the effects on their families or just use it to help the charities that are struggling.
"There are quite a few that will go to the wall soon if they're not helped out because the amount of donations are down by a quarter."

Lotto jackpots to new $90m record, by Marissa Calligeros and Georgina Robinson - Fairfax - 24th June 2009
Oz 7 Lotto has reached an all-time Australian record, jackpotting to a whopping $90 million after there were no first division winners in last night's draw.
Australians spent $87 million on a one-in-45 million chance to bag last night's jackpot, which pushed the first prize up from $50 million to $59 million.
"We were going to go to $60 million next week if it jackpotted but due to the unprecedented level of interest in last night's draw, the decision has been made to offer a minimum guaranteed jackpot level of $90 million," Tattersalls spokeswoman Karen Anning said.
Before yesterday, the record jackpot for an Australian lottery was $50 million.
While there were no division one winners in last night's draw, 32 Australians scored the $26,376.35 division two prize.
Four Queenslanders, from Brisbane, Hendra, Cairns and Port Douglas, were among the division two winners.
The $3,705.20 division three prize was scored by 469, while close to 3000 players picked up a handy $304.
At Inala Plaza News, where a record seven division one winning tickets have been sold in the past, Tamara Bowe said the afternoon rush was a "complete frenzy".
Lotto hopefuls queued out the door waiting to secure their chance in the record draw.
"It was a complete frenzy, chaos...an absolute madhouse," Ms Bowe said.
"So much for a recession. People were certainly happy to spend their money yesterday.
"We were flat out all day and then when people started getting off work in the afternoon things turned to a complete frenzy," Ms Bowe said.
That's not to say Ms Bowe and her staff didn't have their hands in the mix.
"Oh yes, of course we bought tickets...quite a few actually."
The team at Inala News are planning to do it all again next Tuesday, when the draw jackpots again.
The Australian Lotto Bloc will today announce the final amount of next week's Oz 7 Lotto.

One in two adults buys ticket for $90m Oz Lotto Draw, by Xanthe Kleinig - The Daily Telegraph - 29th June 2009
Ten million tickets, $150 million in sales, a $90 million first prize - and a dream for every entry.
Australia's biggest lotto jackpot has officials expecting one in two adults in Australia to try their luck in tomorrow's OZ Lotto draw.
NSW Lotteries communications manager John Vineburg said punters' imaginations had been captured by the potential size of the haul.
"It's hard to believe but about every second adult in the country will be in the draw," he said.
Many will be hoping to improve their chances by buying tickets at "lucky" outlets. Others, figuring the odds will be in their favour, will head to hundreds of agencies that have never had a significant win.
Adam Schofield, 30, said yesterday he had a group entry with workmates.
Mr Schofield and partner Denise Souza, 30, browsed at the Ferrari showroom in William St in the city.
The pair would buy themselves an apartment and a sports car if they hit the jackpot.
But Mr Schofield wasn't getting too far ahead of his dream.
"I think there's a better chance on the pokies - and no one wins off those," he said.
Despite the small chance of getting all seven numbers (one in 45 million) lotto agents are bracing for a rush on tickets before sales close on Tuesday evening ahead of the draw.
To win, players must match seven numbers drawn from a machine.
Mr Vineburg said there was likely to be only one or just a few winning entries but the large number of syndicates entered meant the money could be split between any number of new millionaires.
The three luckiest suburbs in NSW, based on first-division prize wins over the past five years, are Cabramatta, North Strathfield and Chester Hill.
The unluckiest may be Greenfield Park, where a first-division prize of more than $3 million is still unclaimed 10 years after it was won.
You can enter from a single game for $1.10 to the popular 24-game Megapick at $25.30. The draw airs on Channel 7 about 8.30pm tomorrow. (Credit: The Daily Telegraph)

Freak lotto jackpot defies logic, by Conal Hanna - Fairfax - 23rd June 2009
It's supposed to happen once every 11 years.
But, as anyone trying to pick the lucky numbers can attest, lotteries are never predictable.
And so it is that Australia has its third $50 million jackpot in two years tonight.
Organisers expect one in five Queenslanders to buy a ticket for a chance to win the record-equalling first division prize in tonight's Oz 7 Lotto draw.
It's the second time Oz 7 Lotto has hit the $50 million mark, which also occurred for Powerball in 2008.
Combined with last Saturday night's $20 million Gold Lotto draw, and the two other lotteries on Wednesday and Thursday, it makes for a record-breaking $84 million week, $5 million more than the previous record in June last year.
With a late rush expected on tickets today, Lola Mashado, a Relationships Australia branch manager, reminded people not to get carried away with the chance of success.
"Any form of gambling can become addictive. If it's not done for fun. If it's taking over areas of people's lives and it is no longer social gambling," Ms Mashado said.
She said in her time as a financial counsellor she'd seen people in debt spend a lump sum on lotto tickets as a way of fixing their problems.
She'd also had to remind people that, despite superstition, there was no 'system' to winning.
"You need to recognise it's chance. There's no system, no hidden formula around it, just like any other form of gambling," Ms Mashado said.
A single standard entry game panel for tonight's draw has a one in 45,379,620 chance of winning the top prize.
Net takings from Lotto tickets totalled $1.44 billion in the financial 2004/05, out of Australia's total gambling spend of $15.46 billion.

Chinese officials sacked over housing lottery scam - Agence France-Presse - 28th June 2009
Five officials in central China have been sacked and five other people arrested over a scam involving a lottery for apartments.
In China, where the first lottery was authorised in 1987, only two types are allowed: those which provide funds for social projects such as supporting orphans and disabled or elderly people, or for sports installations.
More than 5000 people took part in the lottery which was intended to allocate 124 low-cost apartments in Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, Xinhua news agency said.
Authorities grew suspicious when six consecutive numbers won. The chances of that happening were "one out of a thousand trillion'', a maths specialist from Huazhong Normal University was quoted as saying by a local newspaper.
Police arrested the alleged mastermind and four accomplices, including two who were responsible for drawing the lots and one who wrote a computer program to produce the desired result, Xinhua said.
The suspects allegedly took nearly one million yuan ($186,567) and are likely to be charged with economic crimes, it said, quoting a city official.

Rush is on for record OzLotto draw, by Margaret Wenham - The Courier-Mail - 27th June 2009
Try calling the Golden Casket office and you're warned that because of the interest in Tuesday's record-breaking $90 million Oz Lotto draw you may be on hold for some time.
"This is the biggest draw of all time," Golden Casket public relations manager Karen Anning said yesterday.
"We're expecting one in three adults to buy a ticket, that's five times more than would normally participate."
Ms Anning said the massive prize amount was calculated from what was left in the division one prize pool from last week's draw – $59 million – together with the expected level of interest this week in the jackpotted amount.
"We're guaranteeing $90 million, but it may go beyond that," she said.
She said the previous biggest lotto win was a $58.7 million Powerball prize won in June last year.
Punters have until 7.30pm on Tuesday to buy their ticket, but Ms Anning warned people not to leave it too late.
"We're encouraging people to buy their entries now as we had one store in Melbourne that ran out of paper last week," she said.
Last year, more Gold Coast residents than anywhere else in Queensland enjoyed big Lotto wins, winning $25,056,910 in first division prizemoney.

Victorians flock to buy tickets for $50 million Oz Lotto draw, by Antonia Magee - Herald Sun - 23rd June 2009
Lotto mania has hit Victoria and more than a million people are expected to buy a ticket for Tuesday's $50 million Oz Lotto.
That's triple the number of those usually in the draw.
About 20 per cent of the state's population were predicted to buy at least a single ticket, Tattersall's spokeswoman Karen Anning said.
"We are expecting one of the busiest days in our history," Ms Anning said.
She said most people opted to buy a single quick pick ticket, but when the jackpot grew, many also took part in syndicates or system entries with family and friends.
Mathematics expert Peter Taylor, from Melbourne University, said the odds of winning first division tonight were about one in 45 million. There was a 2.3 per cent chance it would be a Victorian.
"It's not very good odds," Prof Taylor said. "People would be much more likely to win playing blackjack."

$50m lottery winner plans to grow better carrots - 16th June 2009
A 74-year-old amateur gardener who scooped a 25 million pound ($50 million) lottery prize said on Tuesday he would spend part of his winnings hiring an expert to learn how to grow better carrots.
Brian Caswell said he had always struggled with the vegetable on the prize-winning allotment he maintains with his wife Joan, 71, in Halliwell, near Bolton.
"I've been trying to grow carrots ever since I've been on that allotment and I've never had any success," he said.
"What I'm going to do now is bring a professional in and say, 'Right, sort that out'."
He said the couple had decided to go public with the news of their huge win in last Friday's EuroMillions draw on the advice of lottery operator Camelot.
"How could you keep that secret?" he said. "The answer is you can't."
His wife said she was still adjusting to her sudden wealth, which saw the couple's win splashed on the front of the Sun and the Daily Mirror newspapers.
"Usually we are the people sitting watching the television, and now everybody is sitting watching Brian and I."

Privatisation battle shifts to NSW Lotteries, by Alexandra Smith - The Sydney Morning Herald - 5th June 2009
Another privatisation battle is looming for the Premier, Nathan Rees. At least 15 MPs, including the former racing and gaming minister Grant McBride, are opposed to the sale of NSW Lotteries.
Several MPs on the right, including Richard Amery, Tony Stewart and Paul Gibson, fear small businesses could suffer if NSW Lotteries products were no longer sold in newsagents.
Mr McBride, who was gaming minister for four years, warned caucus this week the sale of products such as scratchies in casinos or pubs could turn "soft gambling" into a more serious problem.
The Kiama MP, Matt Brown, did not vote against the privatisation in caucus but it is understood he told caucus he was worried that the sale of Lotteries could ruin small business in towns and regions.
Several MPs also gave TAB outlets as an example, which they said disappeared from main streets and into pubs and clubs when the TAB was privatised by the Carr government in 1998.
One senior MP said there was widespread concern in caucus that the Government was selling one of its "biggest cash cows for no good reason".
"If you are that dependent on gaming revenue, which lots of governments are, why would you sell something that makes you so much money?" the MP said.
The Government is hoping to raise between $500 million and $600 million from the sale of NSW Lotteries in a deal that would enable it to retain its annual revenue stream of more than $300 million from gaming duties.
The latest stoush over privatisation follows the battle over the sale of prisons. The Government eventually backed away from its plan to sell Cessnock jail and will instead privatise only Parklea prison. (Credit: The Sydney Morning Herald)

Virgin Games Delivers The Ultimate Gaming Experience
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 1, 2009)
Today Virgin Games, the online gaming service, announces that it has centralised its offerings and has become an operating company in its own right working from one common platform. This development will provide a streamlined customer experience by offering players the opportunity to play across multiple gaming products using a central sign on solution and a single Virgin Games wallet. The operation of Virgin Games gaming service was formerly outsourced to three different operators; Wagerworks for Casino; Boss Media for Poker and St.Minver for Bingo. The operation on the new Virgin Games platform has now been taken in-house and will be managed centrally from their head office in Guernsey.
With the Virgin customer experience being of core importance, players now only need to register once to become a Virgin Games player and browse seamlessly through all of the games at Virgin Poker, Virgin Casino and Virgin Bingo. Additionally, under the new system, Virgin players will be able to play for bonus promotions and Virgin Games loyalty points, V-Points, across all games offered.
The strategic shift to become a fully fledged gaming operator has taken place at Virgin Games over the last 18 months. The company now operates using two gaming licenses held in Alderney and Malta and runs an in-house customer service call centre as well as owning and co-ordinating player databases and payment processing systems. The 24/7 customer experience solution will bring all consumer touch points together in-house including telephone, email and web-chat communication resulting in greater control, improved efficiency and an all round excellent customer experience.
Simon Burridge, CEO Virgin Games, comments: "In developing and taking ownership of the new customer experience program, we have focused on creating the best possible value and service for our customers. Here at Virgin Games, we live and breathe the Virgin brand values and feel taking the customer service department in-house and integrating all three gaming services allows us to continue to deliver the unique Virgin experience that our customers have come to expect."
"Our players have told us that they would like to see a wider range of games at Virgin Games and we intend to give them exactly what they're looking for. There have been some very exciting new games brought into the market recently and we look forward to introducing them into the Virgin Games product offering" said Burridge.
