Victorians flock to buy tickets for $50 million Oz Lotto draw, by Antonia Magee - Herald Sun - 23rd June 2009

Lotto mania has hit Victoria and more than a million people are expected to buy a ticket for Tuesday's $50 million Oz Lotto.

That's triple the number of those usually in the draw.

About 20 per cent of the state's population were predicted to buy at least a single ticket, Tattersall's spokeswoman Karen Anning said.

"We are expecting one of the busiest days in our history," Ms Anning said.

She said most people opted to buy a single quick pick ticket, but when the jackpot grew, many also took part in syndicates or system entries with family and friends.

Mathematics expert Peter Taylor, from Melbourne University, said the odds of winning first division tonight were about one in 45 million. There was a 2.3 per cent chance it would be a Victorian.

"It's not very good odds," Prof Taylor said. "People would be much more likely to win playing blackjack."
