Electronic game introduces a new dimension of bingo to land-based players
MarketWire
22nd January 2009
OAKVILLE, ONTARIO - Parlay Entertainment Inc. (TSX VENTURE: PEI), the world's leading supplier of Internet and TV bingo software solutions, has teamed with Norsk Bingo AS to launch a new concept in bingo entertainment.
In the fall of 2008, Norsk deployed the first 20 of what will soon be 2,000 touch-screen tabletop kiosks in 30 bingo halls throughout Norway. This is a new and innovative way for Norwegian players to access bingo online, while still in their favourite hall. All game play and access is controlled by radio frequency cards which let players activate their accounts and manage financial transactions. Players access a kiosk by simply flashing the card in front of it. From there they can play Parlay Bingo using a touch screen.
Perry Malone, CTO and co-founder of Parlay Entertainment, said: "Parlay has always been a leader in the online bingo industry. And we're pleased to be part of this latest innovation. The collaboration between Norsk and Parlay sets a new direction for both the online and land-based bingo industries, and is further evidence of the wide-ranging convergence that is sweeping through this sector. An innovative offering like this can help reinvigorate the land-based industry, whilst at the same time bring online bingo to a wider audience."
Norsk's Lars Bakken Elvsveen agrees. "Norwegians have a great love for bingo and this gives them the opportunity to enjoy a new dimension of the game. Bringing Parlay's online bingo games to our existing bingo halls is a winning combination for all. Players have more ways to play and win and we introduce the excitement of the electronic game to our traditional land-based players."
Parlay will be exhibiting at ICEi - part of the International Gaming Expo - at London's Earls Court, January 27-29, marking the eighth consecutive year that Parlay has supported this conference. We welcome all visitors to drop by our stand #5350.

Soap actors star in 'bingo lingo - Metro - 27th January 2009
ITV Bingo has created two new 'rooms' dedicated to Coronation Street and Emmerdale - adding a new soap twist to the fast-growing online game.
Traditional calls of 'two fat ladies' and 'legs 11' have been given the elbow in the online 'venues', powered by Party Gaming - and instead the likes of 'Betty's hot pot with wine/number nine', 'Zoe's institutionalized/number 25' and 'Trisha crushed by a chimney/number 53' will be used.
Controller of ITV Play, William Van Rest, said: "When we designed these rooms we knew we were combining two of the nation's great loves, soaps and bingo, but we never imagined it would spark a change in the fundamentals of the game.

Foxy Bingo stake up for sale? - 25th January 2009
A 20% stake in Foxy Bingo may be up for sale after one of its investors said they were looking to sell assets.
Independent News & Media plc, Ireland's largest publisher and the owner of the Independent newspaper in the UK, said that it was looking to offload non-core assets to meet a €200 million payment due later this year.
The bond was expected to have been met by the sale of INM' stake in Australian media company APN News and Media.
Analysts said likely candidates for a sale were INM's 20% stake in Cashcade, the owner of Foxy Bingo, Think Bingo and Bingo Scotland, or its stake in Verivox, a price-comparison site in Germany, and an African outdoor advertising operation.
INM said it would be “pursuing alternative strategies to secure sufficient capital to both de-leverage and de-risk its balance sheet, with a focus on free cash flow generation”.
Cashcade has been the subject of interest from various companies in the past 12 months, including 888.com and investment vehicle Praesepe. A bid from 888.com was rumoured to have got within days of completion, only for investors to back out of loaning the money for a takeover because of the credit crunch.
Other investors in Cashcade including Michael Buckley, who is the company chairman, Michael Tabor, the super wealthy investor and former bookmaker and Irish billionaire Dermot Desmond. The management team owns approximately 20 per cent of the business.

Kentucky governor to appeal bingo domains case - 23rd January 2009
Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear will appeal a court ruling that prevents the state from seizing domain names used by online gambling sites.
A Kentucky Court of Appeal ruling had said that domain names did not constitute ‘gambling devices’ and therefore were not liable to seizure. The 2-to-1 court ruling had been greeted by online gambling advocates as an important victory.
J. Michael Brown, Kentucky’s Secretary of Justice and Public Safety, said: “The Commonwealth will continue its action to protect Kentucky citizens from illegal internet gambling operations.
“The evidence [presented in the original lower court case] demonstrated that illegal and unregulated activity is occurring in Kentucky and that millions of dollars are being lost as a result of that activity.
141 domains were shortlisted for seizure, including some top US bingo names such as usabingo.com, bingoknights.com, winabingo.com and bingoworkz.com. Others targeted include leading poker site such as pokerstars.com, fulltiltpoker.com and ultimatebet.com and major sports betting sites such as sportsbook.com and www.sportsbetting.com.
Joe Brennan Jr., chairman of iMEGA, who represented many of the domain owners, said: “We’re not surprised that Gov. Beshear and Secretary (J. Michael) Brown filed their appeal. They both invested a lot of political capital in this suit. They likely feel they can’t back down.
“Their attorneys took this on a contingency fee-basis, and have reportedly sunk over a million dollars of their own money in this suit, and other suits like this that they reportedly prepared for other states. Without a win in Kentucky, it will be hard to get those other suits off the ground, and they’ll have taken huge losses on their own gamble.”
The appeal is expected to be heard in April 2009.

NYX to Launch New Bingo Software at ICE(i)
New features give operators the flexibility to fully customize the product
January 19, 2009 (InfoPowa News) -- Swedish online gambling software provider NYX Interactive plans to launch a new and innovative bingo product at the forthcoming International Gaming Exhibition, taking place next week at London's Earls Court Exhibition Centre.
The company claims that the new software is of modern design and includes many new features that give operators the flexibility to fully customize the look and feel of the product while increasing player enjoyment and loyalty.
"The idea behind the new design was to create a 'live bingo experience'. The new client feels light, flexible and quickly responds to every click," said a company spokesman this week. "Design features, shapes, the movement of components and information display interact to create a very user-friendly client, enticing the visitor to play bingo, and get more out of their bingo game play.
"Operators have more freedom to brand their bingo than before, and the client also enables individual branding for each bingo room, and even per individual bingo game," he added.
Staffan Lindgren, CEO of NYX Interactive, said, "Whilst this new client is quick to market, it's also very flexible and modular so that both operators and their players get the bingo they want."
Players do not need to leave the online bingo room to transfer funds, manage profiles, view game play history, send a query to customer service, manage weekly spending limits or play a wide range of mini games, and can jump between rooms without having to go via the lobby in the new software.
The player also has the option to close down the chat area to view more tickets. Players who have not yet registered can watch a game in play to get a preview of the benefits of signing up, and can register via both the lobby and the bingo room itself.
The community feature that is a significant element in NYX bingo software has been further developed in the latest version. Players can see what rooms their friends are playing in when logging in and can initiate private chats and read each other's profiles in the bingo room. NYX bingo also has a library of avatars and emoticons to make the chat experience more personal. (Credit: InfoPowa News)

Online bingo - market comparison
June 2008
The popularity of online bingo websites has quadrupled since 2004 and, though the market is dominated by familiar names from the offline world such as Gala Bingo, The Sun, and Ladrokes, an increasing number of web-only bingo games are capturing market share.
According to data from Hitwise, the web intelligence service, the popularity of Bingo in the UK has pretty much doubled since July 2007 alone, based on UK visits.
The picture of online bingo as a growing market is backed up by Google Trends, which shows a four-fold increase in UK searches for the term “online bingo” since late 2004.
Which bingo websites are popular?
According to the Hitwise data, the biggest player in the online bingo market is Gala Bingo with more than 25% market share of UK visits.
Gambling - Bingo » All sites » Weekly rankings for the week ending 07/06/2008 » Ranks by 'Visits'
Rank Website Market Share
1 Gala Bingo 25.13%
2 Foxybingo.com 14.03%
3 Sun Bingo 12.33%
4 Ladbrokes Bingo 9.36%
5 Wink Bingo 4.78%
6 Mecca Bingo 3.53%
7 Sky Bingo 2.62%
8 Mirror Bingo 2.61%
9 ITV Bingo 1.96%
10 888Ladies.com 1.90%
Source: Hitwise UK 11.6.08
Gala is the biggest name in the traditional world of bingo rooms, with 175 clubs, 5 million members and 32 million admissions every year. Gala claims a 40% bingo market share overall (offline and online, presumably), so it clearly faces tougher competition on the web.
Foxybingo.com, ranked second here, is unlikely to be familiar to traditional bingo players because it lacks a high-street presence, but has made a significant impact in the online world. The Hitwise data below shows that Foxy Bingo has closed the gap in the past year from more than 20% to just over 10% share of UK visits.

Online Casino and Bingo big Hit with Women says Hitwise
The phenomenal success of online gambling seems to have been mirrored by another unpredicted rise, the unprecedented number of women now being drawn to bingo websites.
A survey carried out by Hitwise revealed that although fewer women use regular betting sites, bingo website visitors are invariably female in 3 out of every 5 cases.
“The industry has enjoyed explosive growth and in order to continue to gain market share, gambling sites will need to lure new audiences,” explained Hitwise Research Director, Heather Hopkins. “Women have traditionally been underrepresented on gambling websites but bingo is changing that. So-called ‘soft-gambling’ opens the doors to a new audience.”

Jackpotjoy Scoops Three Nominations!
27th November 2008
Jackpotjoy is delighted to announce that it’s been nominated for three top awards at the BingoPort.co.uk’s Players Choice Awards.
The site, most famous for its huge jackpots and prize laden Price is Right Bingo, is now up for Best Chat Team, Best Innovation and Best Operator – a range that reflects the site’s ability to be succeed across the board.
So how does it feel to be nominated for the Best Chat Team award?
Jackpotjoy Bingo Product Owner James Goddard told us: “It’s no surprise that our chat team has been nominated for this award. It’s a fantastic accolade. Every hour of every day they work hard to make sure our players feel welcome, secure and entertained.”
No wonder the chat team has been nominated! Alongside running a variety of chat games and competitions this hard working team maintain Jackpotjoy’s bustling forum and keep a lot of happy customers entertained.
Innovation has always been close to Jackpotjoy’s heart, and their nomination here was a credit to the London based development team.
2008 will always be remembered as the year the site went mobile – they are currently offer 3 top mobile games, but there was a lot more. They can also now offer CUTIES, a series of chat games that look set to raise the bar how users interact with gaming sites.
James is understandably pleased with Jackpotjoy’s record. When asked, he proudly gushed: “when it comes to online gaming it’s fair to say – you heard it first, you saw it first…you played it first at Jackpotjoy.com.
But there’s more to the site than the Chat and Innovation Teams, there’s a united and strong crew behind Jackpotjoy whose efforts are reflected in the sites nomination in the main Best Operator category, the nomination Goddard was most pleased by.
“This is a great boost,” he told us. “The company’s doubled in size in 2008, but we’ve kept our exemplary service, cutting edge gaming and - of course - our astonishing jackpots. Bring on 2009!”

ABC hastens call on 'Bingo Night', By JOSEF ADALIAN - Variety - 13th March 2007
ABC is betting big on bingo.
Net that struck it big with "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" is fast-tracking production on six episodes of "National Bingo Night," a primetime gameshow that will give viewers the chance to win major prizes by playing along a home.
Andrew Glassman ("Average Joe") created and will exec produce the skein via his Glassman Media shingle.
VP: not Grandma's game
Alphabet isn't wasting any time getting "Bingo" on the air, scheduling it to air Fridays at 9 p.m., starting May 18. Ed Sanders ("Extreme Makeover: Home Edition") will host.
"The feel of the show is like a slot machine on your television," ABC senior VP of alternative John Saade told Daily Variety. "It's colorful and fast-moving. It doesn't look like Grandma's bingo."
Skein will be set on what's being called a "bingoplex," an ultrasleek set that features what Saade called a "terrifyingly large" mechanism for dispensing the bingo balls.
Interactivity has become a major buzzword in network circles in the past year, with all the webs now adding "text and win" game elements to their primetime reality skeins.
ABC's "Bingo" will be lower-tech, allowing anyone with a computer and a printer to simply print out a special bingo card from ABC.com and play along at home. Winners will redeem their prizes -- gift certificates, coupons, merchandise -- online.
Saade said the net is exploring alternate distribution methods for viewers without computer access.
For auds who don't want to play along, there will be a parallel onscreen, in-studio game that unfolds as the bingo numbers are being called.
"The contestant is playing a slightly different game (than the viewer) that's related to the numbers coming down the chute," Saade said. That contestant will be playing against the in-studio audience for a chance at a major cash prize.
Each hourlong episode will feature three games of bingo.
Saade said Glassman came in and pitched his idea last year.
"We had been looking for the right interactive idea, and this one was so simple and clean," he said. "It couldn't be easier."
ABC is hoping "Bingo" can serve as a long-term solution to its Friday night woes.
"I think Friday night works well for this show," Saade said. "It's a fun time for people to watch with their families. This feels like a kickoff to the weekend."

Perth, Western Australia: National Bingo Night, by Stephen Corby - The Sunday Times - 17th October 2008
It might sound counter-intuitive, but giving away large sums of money to complete strangers is, apparently, enormously enjoyable.
Tim Campbell, of Home and Away fame, loves doing just that as host of Seven's new interactive game show, National Bingo Night.
“It's a really good feeling and a bit of an ego trip, because you're in control of this game and you're allowed to give away big money,'' he says.
“So you take all the credit, but it's not your cash.
“Right from the first contestant on the show, who did really well, I just felt so good when people won, and with some people winning $50,000, they're pretty happy, too.
“But then with those people who didn't win, I'd feel really bad for them. I'd be there after the taping, apologising to them.''
The televised version of bingo _ a game that seems to become a compulsory part of life once you reach retirement age _ is giving everyone in the country the chance to cash in, and make Campbell seem even more generous.
You can play along with the game card found in today's Sunday Times (and another next Sunday) _ with $10,000 up for grabs.
“It's great because you can win some cash and it doesn't cost you anything to enter,'' Cambell says.
“If I wasn't on the show already I'd be getting a few mates together, taking it back to the '80s and dagging it up a bit, with my game cards and maybe some Cheezels.''
While National Bingo Night is Campbell's first turn at being a game show host, it's not his first crack at the art of number calling.
“I have called bingo, I did it for three months in the food court of a shopping centre, every Thursday, in Melbourne,'' he says.
“I didn't bother to learn all the calls _ like legs 11 and so on _ so I just made up my own ridiculous calls every time. Most people enjoyed that but the regulars did give me dirty looks.
“I did a lot of shopping-centre work in my time to support being an actor, instead of being a waiter.
“Some actors would say `Oh no, I couldn't', but so far my career has been about being a dag and its working.''
Campbell admits to being a lover of game shows, and a big fan of Andrew O'Keefe's work on Deal Or No Deal, but says he didn't want to model his hosting persona on anyone.
“I just jumped in there and relied on my idiotic instincts to get me through,'' he laughs.
“I never thought I'd be hosting a gameshow and when they offered it to me I just thought `Oh my God, now I'm Eddie McGuire.'
“But I had a ball with it. I was worried about the concept of the show at first and having to stick to a script, but it's just a matter of me understanding how the game works, taking control and having fun with it.
“I guess I'm a bit of a ham anyhow, so that helps.
“It's based on bingo, so it's not rocket science.''
When TV Guide spoke to Campbell, he was just half an hour away from ending his career on Home and Away, after three years playing Dan Baker, but that doesn't mean he's giving up acting to become the next Tony Barber.
“I'm just about to go and film my exit storyline, then I'm off to Perth to do the musical Rent, then I go to Sydney and Melbourne to do Shout, and I get to play Johnny O'Keefe, which will be great,'' he says.
“It's kind of weird leaving Home and Away, and I think I might shed a tear or two.
“It's the social aspect I'm going to miss, because as clichéd as it sounds they actually are a great bunch of people, the cast and crew. It will be a lifestyle change, but you've got to try new things.
“I've got the game show and the musical theatre but I want to jump on to another drama next year, because acting will always be number one for me.''

The History of Bingo
Bingo, or Housie as it is called in Australia and New Zealand, began life as long ago as the 16th century. Its roots lie in Italy where a state run lottery game funded the nation's coffers. That Italian lottery was a direct ancestor of the game of bingo as we know it today.
Bingo then spread throughout Europe where it appeared in many guises. In the late 19th century it was popular in Germany as an educational tool to help teach maths and multiplication: it is still widely used as a teaching aid today.
The game of bingo really took off in the Unites States where it was used as a way of raising funds for charities. Bingo was originally played with beans and was immediately daubed Beano in the US bingo is a shortened version of 'Bean-Go' which Americans started calling the game.
A New York businessman saw the commercial possibilities of bingo and hired a mathematician called Carl Leffler to devise more combinations in bingo cards: in months Leffler invented 6000 different cards. He is said to have then gone insane - the first of many people to be driven to distraction by bingo.
It wasn't until the 1960's that bingo came back across the Atlantic and that bingo as a pastime took off in Britain. Eric Morley, the man who presided over the Miss World pageant, saw bingo as way of filling the cinemas, variety theatres and dance halls that had been left empty by the rise of television. It was Morley that reinvented bingo as a commercial concern.
Morley was greatly helped by the relaxation of Britain's gambling laws. Strangely, bingo was never frowned upon like other forms of gambling and was seen as an enjoyable, sociable hobby for everyone. Before long Eric Morley's company Mecca led the bingo craze.
Unlike the entertainments that it replaced bingo proved a sure fire way of filling the buildings that TV had left redundant. It gradually became more sophisticated with Random Number Generating machines replacing the original contraptions that were used to draw numbers: the old machines not only looked homemade they also allowed for games to be fixed very easily.
Bingo's unique vocabulary also took root at this stage with the, now everyday, phrases like 'Two Fat Ladies' becoming popular. A Caller of the Year contest is still held annually in Britain. Today the larger bingo halls do not use the old vocabulary but it lives on in holiday resorts and social clubs.
And the bingo halls themselves were modernised. No longer did they have the atmosphere of old cinemas mourning the loss of their silver screen stars. The hall's now had the feel of purpose built bingo venues. Indeed in the 1980's purpose built bingo halls began to appear, the first opened in Canton in Cardiff. Many venues now offer a full night out with people meeting up early to enjoy meals and drinks before the game starts.
Bingo seems to live outside the normal dictates of fashion and social trends. In 2004 more people went to bingo halls than went to football matches in the UK and bingo continued to attract celebrities like Elle MacPherson and Mariah Carey.
Bingo has embraced the internet and online bingo is now a multi-million pound business in Britain. In one way, however, bingo has stayed loyal to its roots with a major feature of online bingo being the chat options that online bingo sites offer. Even with new technology bingo has remained a very social game.
Like the traditional game of bingo the US led the way in the online bingo craze. But the UK now enjoys the fastest growing online bingo market. Many players enjoy both online bingo and traditional bingo halls, although the internet has an appeal to younger generations with 90% of online players under the age of 50.
Online bingo sites tend to offer both the traditional British 90 ball game and the US 75 ball game. The sites, like many traditional bingo halls, offer all round entertainment with slot machine and card games as well as multiple bingo rooms that you can play bingo in and now they even offer free bingo games to new players.
Both online and offline bingo continues to thrive. From unlikely beginnings in Italy it has spread across the world and continues to enthral and frustrate players today. And, with the growth of online bingo, it seems likely that bingo will continue to delight millions for a long time to come.
